There are a couple of basic ways to search this site for matching text. A quick way is to use the site's built-in search engine (shown below). A second way is to use a generalized search engine, such as Google .
The built-in search engine will search HTML documents, but will not search other documents, such as the rich text files (RTF) that have been included in the site for you to download and print. A generalized search engine can be made to search all documents, however, including the RTF files, so you don't have to download and search them individually. Click here to see a detailed example of how to do this.
Use the form below to do a search of html documents in LWWA.org containing words or combinations of words. Our built-in text search engine will display a weighted list of matching documents with better matches shown first. Each list item is a link to a matching html document; if the document has a title it will be shown, otherwise only the document's file name is displayed. A brief explanation of the query language is available, along with examples.
![]()
The text search engine allows queries to be formed from arbitrary Boolean expressions containing the keywords AND, OR, and NOT, and grouped with parentheses. For example:
- information retrieval
- finds documents containing 'information' or 'retrieval'
- information or retrieval
- same as above
- information and retrieval
- finds documents containing both 'information' and 'retrieval'
- information not retrieval
- finds documents containing 'information' but not 'retrieval'
- (information not retrieval) and WAIS
- finds documents containing 'WAIS', plus 'information' but not 'retrieval'
- web*
- finds documents containing words starting with 'web'
