The webmaster formerly preferred to store Association web documents in rich-text-file format (file type .rtf) in the belief that rtf files were backward compatible with all versions of Microsoft Word and could be accessed by MAC users. We are in the process, however, of reevaluating in favor of Adobe's portable document format (pdf) because it handles complex graphics that rtf doesn't and pdf files can still be processed by MACs. Pdf formats have been adopted by many branches of government for official documents, e.g., the IRS for its publications, giving pdf files an imprimatur that is comfortable. Adobe's pdf reader is a free download from www.adobe.com/downloads. A free tool is available on the Internet to create PDF documents at http://www.pdf995.com/download.html. (Thanks Kim Komando).
For downloading rtf files, various browsers and browser-versions will handle rtf files differently. If you're using Internet Explorer or America Online and a left-click doesn't seem to work, try right-clicking the link. You may have to select "Save Target As." For Windows 98 see "Context Menu". If you're using Netscape Navigator, use the dialog box. For Opera, Mozilla, or Firefox, use their built-in dialogs.
