From
the tee, the twelfth hole doesn't look as if it should be the number 4 (men's
handicap) or the number 3 (red/gold handicap). With yardages of 382
(blue), 364 (white), and 330 (red/gold), it's a deceivingly simple-looking par
4. There's water on the far left that normally won't come into play and
there's a creek that runs perpendicular to the fairway just below the elevated tee. These are
not the challenges.
The challenge on this hole comes on the second shot. If you're playing greens in regulation, you probably take pride in playing your second shot to the green. But on this hole, for the non-scratch golfer, that might not be real wise.
Just
before the green and hidden to the unwary, Charlie Brown's kite-eating tree has
morphed into 0012's ball-eating pond. Further, there is enough of an
up-slope bank to the pond on the green side that running the ball on (assuming
you can just clear the pond) is a nil possibility. Therefore, you
must hit to the green and stick it there. No problem, you think.

Unfortunately, the 12th green is also relatively shallow from front-to-back, and so the second-shot is hairy. A bunker guards the green on the back side, but do you really want to be on the beach with a delicate sand shot back onto the green? If you catch a flyer out of the bunker, you're in the drink!! Betcha Annika Sorenstam would be putting for a birdie though.
