Okay,
so you had a great burger and fries at the clubhouse and washed it down with an
excellent imported beer. You had a great front nine and today's the day
for sure that you'll break (100, 90, or 80?). The tenth is a
straight-away, slightly uphill, par 4. The men's handicap on this hole is
6 and the red/gold is 5. Yardages are 400 (blue), 393 (white), and 363
(red/gold).
So what's the problem? A generously wide fairway off a slightly elevated the tee narrows precipitously some 200+ yards out. If you drift to your right with your tee shot, you'll be blocked by trees on your approach. If you get too far to your left, you'll also be blocked by trees. If you get far enough to your left, you'll find back yards and an out-of-bounds. And if you duck hook off the tee Mr. Right-hander, there's a duck pond just waiting to test the water-proofedness of your new white golf shoes!
Once past the narrow neck of trees, there is an open shot to an accommodating green. Approach shots that drift to the right will rarely roll back to the fairway because the slope is not that steep. Trees come into play on the right and there are back yards and out-of-bounds on the left. Can't you just picture Freddie Couples nailing one from here?
The tenth green is deep. Depending upon pin position, this can be a challenging putting green. Best "greenie" is to be below the pin. Such a pretty hole -- Spyglass eat your heart out.
